Furniture & Mattress Store Owners: Clean Sells!

If you have a retail store it’s imperative to keep it as clean and sanitary as possible. My good friend and dealer Jim Hick’s from Mattress Mart in Zanesville, Ohio is fanatical about this. When he shops competitors he looks at the store through the eyes of the consumer. Often when he looks up when he is laying down on a bed he is amazed at what he sees. This attention to detail keeps Jim’s store profitable year after year even in down economies.

Depending on your target market, this could have a huge impact on repeat business. Your customers have more and more choices on where to buy their furniture and mattresses from. Offering a pleasing and clean environment to shop in could possibly turn the balance in your favor.

Today, customers notice everything (even when you don’t think they notice) and guess what? Few will say anything to you, but they will let you know by never visiting again or telling their friends.

• Filthy bathrooms?
• Bad odors?
• Cobwebs in the corners?
• Burned out light bulbs?
• Stained floors?

Not acceptable if you want to run a successful business and you must make it a priority to keep your place of business clean and as inviting as possible. Promote somebody to C.C.O. (Chief Cleanliness Officer) and make it their job to stay on top of this. I was so frustrated with one of my dealers once that I spent hours cleaning his restroom. To my surprise he kept it clean after that.
